A retired civil servant in Motijheel Colony had a Toyota Premio that had developed a brake squeal — a high-pitched squeal when braking lightly that disappeared when firmer braking was applied. Light-braking squeal that disappears under firm braking is caused by brake pad vibration at the pad-disc interface during light pressure — the pad is moving slightly within the caliper bracket at low clamp loads, producing the squeal. This is separate from wear-related squeal and is caused by worn caliper anti-squeal shims behind the brake pads. Our technician removed all four brake pads — the shims on all four corners had worn thin, losing their anti-vibration function. New pads were fitted with new OEM-specification anti-squeal shims. The test drive confirmed brake squeal eliminated at all brake pressures. On the same visit, the Premio's tyres were rotated — the front tyres showing slightly more wear than the rear from the front-wheel-drive drivetrain.
