BMW vehicles have electronic brake wear sensors embedded in the brake pads — when the pad wears to the indicator depth, the sensor circuit is completed and the dashboard warning is triggered. Our technician confirmed the warning by inspecting all four corners — the rear left pad had triggered the sensor and the rear right was at near-equal wear. Both rear pads were replaced along with the wear sensor wires, which must be replaced whenever the pads are changed.
